  • DC United manager Ben Olsen over the moon about new permanent home: “The stadium we deserve”

Comments Off on DC United manager Ben Olsen over the moon about new permanent home: “The stadium we deserve”
    October 7, 2017 /  Football, Uncategorized

WASHINGTON — The last five months haven’t been pleasant ones for D.C. United. A lowly 2-14-4 record and only nine goals scored in 20 matches say all you need to know.

But Thursday’s press conference with D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Grayand the announcement of a $300 million public-private partnership to build a 20,000-seat soccer stadium in the Buzzard Point area of Southwest D.C. injected some serious optimism about the future of the franchise at an ideal time.

“I’m thrilled, as you can imagine,” said United third-year coach Ben Olsen, who has been a part of the club in one capacity or another since 1998. “I’m over the moon about the situation.

“I love this city, I love this team and today they come together with a huge first step to get us the stadium we deserve. The stadium that our fans have deserved, players before me have deserved, the coaches before me have deserved and the front office before this. It’s a great day.

While land acquisition issues, approval from the city council (five council members were in attendance at Thursday’s event) and a finalized stadium plan are only some of the major obstacles that remain for the league’s most decorated franchise to finally move out of RFK Stadium, the signing of a term sheet on Thursday was a big first step.

“I believe in the District and I believe in this team being in the District. Our ownership has done a very good job in a short amount of time to push this tangible first step through,” Olsen said. “Now there’s a lot of work to do, from what I hear. But with [managing partner] Jason Levien at the helm, he’s not going to take no for an answer and he’s going to push this thing until we get to the big house.

Levien has been aggressive in his pursuit of a stadium since joining the club one year ago. In the proposed deal, the District would assume the cost of land acquisition and infrastructure while United would pay for the full cost of the stadium, estimated to be roughly $150 million. Levien said while United haven’t finalized a blueprint that he believes construction would take anywhere from 18-22 months to complete.

“I think it’s going to drive our culture and our fans and our team to new heights,” Levien said. “I think this is a long time coming. And I think that there’s going to be a pep in everyone’s step in the locker room. I talked to our players and our coaches and our management about this. This is something everyone wanted to see happen and I think it’s going to resonate on the field as well as in the city.”

Levien said the team’s focus is to have the facility ready by the start of the 2016 season, but said that the outer end of the timetable could be the 2017 season. Despite the many hurdles likely to crop up throughout the development process, Levien is as optimistic as ever about making United’s new home a reality.

“We’re all in right now. We’re fully committed to this project. I have a lot of confidence in this community,” Levien said. “We signed a term sheet that requires us to move forward. Over the last 12 months there have been stops and starts along the way. Certain things that were important for our city, certain things that were important for our team. So getting here was quite an accomplishment.”

  • F1 boss Ecclestone charged in bribery case

Comments Off on F1 boss Ecclestone charged in bribery case
    September 25, 2017 /  Racing, Uncategorized

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has been charged by German prosecutors with paying a $44 million bribe, placing his future as head of the motor sport series in doubt.

The 82-year-old British billionaire has been under investigation since a German banker was convicted of taking the payment from him in connection with the sale of a stake in F1.

The Munich state court said Ecclestone has until mid-August to respond to charges of bribery and incitement to breach of trust in connection with Gerhard Gribkowsky’s management of the bankBayernLB’s 47 percent stake in F1.

Ecclestone, the longtime commercial head of F1, acknowledged during Gribkowsky’s trial in 2011 that he made the payment five years earlier but said he was pressured to do so.

Ecclestone’s indictment was dated on May 10 and has since been translated into English and delivered to Ecclestone and his lawyers, the court said.

”The lawyers have accepted an indictment,” Ecclestone told The Associated Press. ”It means they have to reply to the indictment, which they are strenuously doing.”

Ecclestone, who Forbes magazine reports is worth $3.8 billion, said he is yet to read the indictment.

”They are alleging I bribed someone,” Ecclestone said, while insisting he did ”nothing illegal.”

Sentences in Germany for bribery range from three months to 10 years in prison.

CVC Capital Partners, the investment group that has owned F1’s commercial rights since 2006, issued no direct comment Wednesday about the future of Ecclestone.

”Mr. Ecclestone has six weeks to provide a response to this bill of indictment prior to a decision being made by the court on opening proceedings,” the board of Formula One Group said in a statement. ”The board will continue to monitor developments in this situation accordingly.”

Ecclestone was retained as chief executive of F1 by CVC after it took control of the sport following the takeover that sparked the bribery case.

Gribkowsky was in charge of selling BayernLB’s stake in F1 to CVC.

In addition to taking the money from Ecclestone, Gribkowsky used BayernLB’s funds to pay the F1 chief a commission of $41.4 million and agreed to pay a further $25 million to Bambino Trust, a company with which Ecclestone was affiliated, prosecutors said during the trial in 2011.

Ecclestone told the court he deserved a commission for the sale, saying ”I did a very, very good job.”

On Wednesday, he told the AP: ”They wanted money. I was shaken down by the guys. It’s happened in life before.”

Gribkowsky, who has largely admitted the charges, was sentenced to 8 1/2 years in prison after being found guilty last year of corruption, tax evasion and breach of trust.

Ecclestone’s German lawyers, Sven Thomas and Norbert Scharf, said they will soon submit a ”comprehensive response” to the court – and the central issue in that response will be ”the varying ‘confessions’ of Mr. Gribkowsky.”

Ecclestone was savvy in building his power base in F1 from the 1970s and helped to create the Formula One Constructors’ Association that controlled the business side of the sport, including selling the TV rights.

The British-based company later became known as Formula One Management. It has fought regular tussles with the teams over finances, but has retained control of the global motor racing series.

CVC, having amassed a 63 percent stake of F1, has reduced its holding as other investors have come on board in recent years, although a planned flotation has stalled.

Ecclestone’s holding has been diluted to about 5 percent.

Geir Mouslon in Munich contributed to this report.

  • Revisiting the Chris Wondolowski argument, now in a bigger and better context

Comments Off on Revisiting the Chris Wondolowski argument, now in a bigger and better context
    September 24, 2017 /  Football, Uncategorized

The book on Chris Wondolowski has usually read like this: sensational striker in league play who may be stretched to make an impact internationally.

It’s really not an awful thing to pin on someone; nobody is accusing the man of drowning kittens here. Taylor Twellman and Jason Kries were other examples of terrific strikers in Major League Soccer who probably reached their top level in league soccer.

Only, with Wondolowski, a few fans and a selected bunch from the chattering class got caught up in the moment and lost some larger context recently. The Earthquakes’ forward did hit six goals in three matches – but the quality of competition was league level. Given international caliber service and backed by international level teammates, Wondolowski is certainly capable of doing the business against overmatched regional small fries.

But it always looked like typical sports overreaction, this flawed tendency to make big, sweeping judgments from every match. (Or, in this case, the false bottom of a short series of them.)

So a week ago, some people were already handing him a ticket to Brazil. Very prematurely so. I wrote as much six days ago.

Now here we are today with two more samples to study. Wondolowski went 77 minutes last week against Costa Rica and then 60 on Sunday against El Salvador. Total goals: zero.

(MORE: What we learned about the United States vs. El Salvador)

He wasn’t awful, not by any stretch. “Wondo” is just not the difference maker that Landon Donovan is. He’s not the athlete that Eddie Johnson is. He doesn’t have the ability to create on his own the way some others in the U.S. player pool can. Wondolowski’s game gets somewhat limited at international level.

Here’s what MLSSoccer.com’s player ratings had to say: “One simple assist pass aside, Wondo was often either stranding himself from the offense or slowing it down. It didn’t help his cause that Eddie Johnson replaced him with such a strong display.”

The New York Times was more harsh still in its ratings. “Never seemed to find a place in the quick-moving U.S. attack.”  Jeff Carlisle at ESPN FC did like the striker’s link-up play, offering that is “was miles better than it was against Costa Rica, as he set up Corona’s goal and sprung Donovan with a telling through ball.” But he also noted the struggle “with some of El Salvador’s physical antics.”

It’s not over; two matches remain. The problem is Johnson, the Seattle Sounders’ striker scored immediately upon coming on Sunday. He seems certain to start in Wednesday’s semifinal, which means the San Jose man’s minutes will dwindle fast.

As I also wrote last week, roster spots are always a zero-sum game; for every roster winner there is a roster loser, in other words. Wondolowski may or may not make the final 23 for Brazil, but you have to circle the man you want knocked aside.

Jurgen Klinsmann pattern of player selection says that Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, Herculez Gomez and Eddie Johnson are all ahead of Wondolowski in the forward depth  pool. (Depending on how you want to count Dempsey, that is.) Landon Donovan is, too; we can probably all agree on that.

Today, Joe Corona looks more likely to make the roster than Wondolowski, even if he is  playing a slightly different position. Either way, it’s a roster spot, and that’s one more obstacle in a very good forward’s path to Brazil.
